Despite the Covid-19 crisis, Medellin will celebrate its stunningly kaleidoscopic, folkloric, 63rd annual ‘Desfile de los Silleteros” flower parade on August 9.

But because of the Coronavirus menace that otherwise would threaten the nearly 1 million people who normally crowd alongside the parade route, this year the Herculean “silletero” flower carriers will comfortably ride atop moving floats – something more like the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

According to a June 15 announcement from the Medellin Mayor’s Office, the annual Feria de las Flores (Medellin Flower Festival) – which always culminates in the spectacular Desfile de Silleteros – is now scheduled to go forward from August 2 to August 9. Covid-be-damned.

“The 2020 Flower Fair will have virtuality as its main platform, with the development of its own application and the ‘Flower Route,’ which will take the celebration to every balcony and window of the city,” according to the Mayor’s Office.

Special precautions and biosafety protocols will protect the silleteros, the musicians, the dancers and artists that add life to the week-long event, according to Medellin Secretary of Culture Lina Gaviria Hurtado.

This year, a mini-version of the usual Silleteros Parade will be held in Santa Elena -- Medellin’s eastern-most township, famous for artisanal flower-growing for more than 100 years.

As in every edition of the annual Silleteros Parade, a panel of judges will view each flower creation and present awards for the various design categories. Following those awards, the silleteros will parade along a one-kilometer route in Santa Elena.

After that, the silleteros and their flower creations will be transported to central Medellin to ride on special floats “through all the townships and communes of Medellín,” the Mayor’s Office added.
