Colombia’s economy still suffers a hangover as the oil-and-mining boom of the prior six years has predictably turned to bust, according to a new study for Medellin-based Andi, Colombia’s national industrial trade association.

The 21st general assembly of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) September 12-17 brings roughly 1,000 conferees representing some 158 countries to Medellin.


The upcoming Feria Internacional del Sector Eléctrico (FISE) conference November 25-27 at Plaza Mayor convention center in Medellin will host some 15,000 national and international delegates and some 300 exhibitors, one-quarter of which are international companies.


Over the course of traveling around Medellin, Antioquia, and elsewhere in Colombia -- off-and-on over a span of nearly 35 years, the last 13 as a permanent resident -- I’ve chalked-up a list favorite places that also might appeal to similarly nature-oriented, “foodie-oriented” and curio-oriented tourists and expats.


While Medellin has seen a huge reduction in the amount of gang violence that plagued the city during the Medellin Cartel era of more than 20 years ago, drug-trafficking and gang violence still continues to claim victims in Colombia and elsewhere -- with the mostly rural Uraba region of northern Antioquia presenting an especially acute situation.

ProColombia – the government export and investment promotion agency – announced September 2 the launch of a new business information service in order to boost Colombia’s exports of goods other than petroleum and minerals.


 Medellin-based Sociedad Antioqueña de Ornitología (SAO) announced July 28 that it will host its fourth annual Medellin Bird Festival on October 11-16, 2017, featuring guided birding walks around the city, expert lectures by Colombian and international ornithology researchers and birding excursions to world-famous sites such as Jardin (Antioquia) and Manizales (Caldas).
