Grupo Excala/Compañía de Empaques 2Q 2026 Profits Double Year-on-Year

Medellin-based packaging specialist Grupo Excala/Compañía de Empaques announced August 14 that its second quarter (2Q) 2026 net income more-than-doubled year-on-year, hitting COP$15.6 billion (US$4.98 million), from COP$7 billion (US$2.2 million) in 2Q 2025.

Revenues rose by a more-modest 7% year-on-year, to COP$208 billion (US$66 million), according to the company.

Commenting on the results, Excala noted that “on the economic front, interest rates in Colombia began to decline at the same pace as inflation, which allowed access to financing on better terms, ultimately having a positive impact on the country’s GDP . . .

“Regarding our raw materials, synthetic fibers exhibited atypical behavior, as a weak U.S. dollar usually leads to increased costs. However, in 2026, prices moved in the same direction.

“This trend allowed us to maintain stable prices throughout the year despite significant increases in labor costs (reduced working hours, higher wages) and higher costs for freight, energy, and other indirect manufacturing costs.

“Fique [natural fiber for certain bags and textiles], on the other hand, has been increasing in price. Nevertheless, we remain committed to Colombian agriculture and supporting the farmers and indigenous communities who derive their livelihood from this fiber.

“We continue investing in and expanding our operations in Mexico . . . [and as a result] Compañía de Empaques Internacional continues to post positive results, driven primarily by demand from the Mexican market served by this plant.

“However, limitations in its volume growth capacity are impacting profitability, as operating costs and expenses (such as personnel, energy, and rent) continue to rise, and the ability to expand sales volume is becoming increasingly restricted.

“Regarding our [synthetic textiles] distribution business in Colombia, Texcomercial saw a significant improvement in its results, driven mainly by lower interest rates, which boosted consumption in the local market,” the company added.
