Medellin’s International Airport Adds Evening Flights to Pereira, Bucaramanga, Monteria

Thanks in part to relentless population shifts into the “oriente” region east of Medellin, Colombian short-haul airline EasyFly this month launches new service between Rionegro (Medellin’s international airport) and the cities of Pereira, Bucaramanga and Monteria.

According to the Agencia Nacional de Infraestructura (ANI, Colombia’s national infrastructure agency), the expanded flight offerings were made possible because of continuing infrastructure upgrades at Rionegro.

Eight years ago, ANI granted concessions to multinational airport operator Airplan, which now operates both the Rionegro airport (José María Córdova)  as well as Medellin’s downtown Olaya Herrera airport.

The new EasyFly services to Pereira, Bucaramanga and Monteria will depart Rionegro after 6 p.m. Such evening services aren’t allowed at Olaya Herrera, which only permits day-time flights.

Since winning the airport concessions in 2008, Airplan has invested more than US$100 million in upgrades at Rionegro and Olaya Herrera, the company added.
